A standard large language model (LLM) is reactive. You send a message; it sends one back. The loop ends there. An AI agent is different in three fundamental ways:
At its core, an agent operates on a loop: Perceive → Plan → Act → Observe → Repeat. It receives a goal, breaks it down into subtasks, executes those subtasks using tools, checks the results, and adjusts — until the goal is met or it hits a boundary it can't cross alone.
Every agentic workflow starts with a signal. This could be a user's natural language instruction, a scheduled cron job, or an event from another system.
Once triggered, the agent decomposes the goal into an ordered sequence of steps. Modern agents use chain-of-thought reasoning — they essentially think out loud before acting, which dramatically improves reliability on complex tasks.
Agents are only as powerful as the tools they can call. Common tools include Web search, Code execution, File I/O, API calls, Browser control, and Memory retrieval.
After each action, the agent evaluates the result. Did the API call succeed? Was the data returned what it expected? This feedback loop is what separates true agents from brittle scripts.
Mature agentic systems know when to pause and ask. Before sending an email on your behalf or deleting a file, a well-designed agent surfaces the action for human approval. This human-in-the-loop checkpoint is not a weakness — it's the architecture of trust.
The problem: A ops manager spends hours every morning checking inventory levels and emailing suppliers when replenishment is needed.
The agentic solution: An AI agent reads current stock levels daily, drafts and sends reorder emails, updates product tags, and generates a summary report. The manager now spends 10 minutes reviewing exceptions.

The agentic solution: An agent monitors the ATS, scores candidates, sends acknowledgment emails, automatically schedules screening calls, and logs reasoning for recruiters to review.
The problem: Developers spend massive time on boilerplate code, documentation, and minor reviews.
The agentic solution: An agent reviews code for bugs, leaves inline comments, updates unit tests, updates the CHANGELOG, and pings the developer only for major breaking changes.
For complex tasks, a single agent hits limits. The answer is multi-agent orchestration, where specialized agents (Research, Data, Writer, Delivery) collaborate under an Orchestrator agent. Frameworks like LangGraph, AutoGen, and CrewAI are purpose-built for this.
It's not autonomous in the dangerous sense—they operate within boundaries. It's not magic; robustness comes from error handling, not blind trust. And it's not a replacement for human judgment.
Agentic AI represents a genuine phase transition in how software works. The shift from "AI as tool" to "AI as collaborator" is underway. The organizations building them carefully — with clear goals, bounded permissions, and human oversight — are the ones finding sustainable leverage. Build thoughtfully. Design for reversibility.
